Nanogest

Why?

Nanogest is a non-profit organization founded in Burundi in July 2001. The organization focusses on a program to encourage high school students to embrace the STEM field (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

The idea stems from the conviction that well mastered scientific subjects and maths constitute a potential for the development of engineering and technological innovations that are critical for the economic growth and sustainable development. It is assumed that all young people have the same potential to acquire and master sciences and mathematics skills and are all equally capable to innovate in technology and engineering.

Where we come from (Background)

The Nanogest was founded in July 2001. It began its activities by supporting AIDS orphans with school fees and accommodation.

It was during the 2018 – 2019 school year that the Nanogest became involved in the current activities to promote excellence in STEM in High School and encourage the best students in Mathematics and Sciences (Physics, Biochemistry and Earth Sciences)

Mission

Through small but impactful actions, we encourage students in Burundi’s schools to embrace the STEM field and we incite them to aim for excellence in this field by awarding prizes to the best performing student in sciences and mathematics. When possible, we also provide prizes to STEM subjects’ teachers whose students perform very well at the national level (State Examination).

Our achievements

Since the school year 2018-2019 and guided by the principle of carrying out small actions with a big impact, we have awarded prizes to different students at two high schools in Bujumbura namely Lycee du Saint Esprit and at SOS Herman Gmeiner High School. The prizes comprise generally the payment of school fees or giving prize money to students or teachers.

How students are evolving

The students we encouraged are currently pursuing degrees in different fields and in different universities around the world. One student is studying medicine in France; the others are studying mathematics and computer sciences and etc.

Future projects

  • To partner with other schools in Bujumbura and in other parts of the country;
  • Invite other members of the community to contribute to Nanogest’s activities;
  • Initiate extracurricular activities that can assist the students to broaden their STEM knowledge;
  • Initiate a fund to support technological/engineering innovations in collaboration with other industry actors.
